چکیده

Measurements of submicron spheres and pillars of silicon single crystals have exhibited a strain-hardening capacity equal to or greater than their metallic counterparts. Stress–strain characteristics are reported for diameters ranging from 40 to 400 nm. Evaluations were performed with nanoindentation-based atomic force, scanning and transmission electron microscopies. Values of strain-hardening exponents up to unity in nanospheres are attributed to a size effect variation on the rate of increase of contact area with deformation. A surface-mediated dislocation nucleation concept is shown to be consistent with length scale effects partially modified by geometry as well as size. It is proposed, but not proven, that the modification relates to greater constraint in compact spheres as opposed to tall pillars. 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. EFFECT OF SILICON CONTENT ON THE STRAIN HARDENING OF DUAL-PHASE STEELS

Abstract: In the current work, the strain hardening behavior of dual-phase steels with different silicon content (0.34- 2.26 Wt. %) was examined using the modified Crussard-Jaoul analysis. It was shown that these dual-phase steels deform in two stages over a uniform strain range. Each stage exhibited a different strain hardening exponent varying with silicon content. At the first stage, work...

Fabrication and Optical Characterization of Silicon Nanostructure Arrays by Laser Interference Lithography and Metal-Assisted Chemical Etching

In this paper metal-assisted chemical etching has been applied to pattern porous silicon regions and silicon nanohole arrays in submicron period simply by using positive photoresist as a mask layer. In order to define silicon nanostructures, Metal-assisted chemical etching (MaCE) was carried out with silver catalyst. Provided solution (or materiel) in combination with laser interference lithogr...

Entropic Confinement of Colloidal Spheres in Corners on Silicon Substrates

We have investigated depletion effects among dispersed, submicron, polystyrene spheres of two different sizes near a faceted silicon substrate. The larger spheres were confined to the corners where two silicon facets intersected (as where a wall meets a floor). The entropic confinement potential increased by 1.2kBT when the small-sphere volume fraction was increased by 14% to 0.37. Large-sphere...

Multipurpose nanomechanical testing machines revealing the size-dependent strength and high ductility of pure aluminium submicron films

The mechanical properties measurement of materials with submicron dimensions is extremely challenging, from the preparation and manipulation of specimens, to the application of small loads and extraction of accurate stresses and strains. A novel, versatile concept of micro and nano-machines to test films or beams with characteristic dimensions ranging between 10 and 1000 nm, allowing multiple l...

Size effects in Al nanopillars: Single crystalline vs. bicrystalline

The mechanical behavior of bicrystalline aluminum nano-pillars under uniaxial compression reveals size effects, a stochastic stress– strain signature, and strain hardening. Pillar diameters range from 400 nm to 2 lm and contain a single, non-sigma high angle grain boundary oriented parallel to the pillar axes. Our results indicate that these bicrystalline pillars are characterized by intermitte...
